Rimrock Dam is an earthen dam, built 1917-1925, on the Tieton River near Yakima, Washington. The Dam is 319 feet high and impounds 198,000 acre feet of water for the purpose of flood control, irrigation, fisheries, and recreation. The dam is owned and operated by the U.S. bureau of Reclamation.
Tieton Hydropower, LLC is the developer, owner, and operator of the plant at the base of the Rimrock Dam. Construction of the plant started in the fall of 2005 approximately 7,000 yards of concrete were used in the foundation along with three 4 foot wide drill shafts which anchor the facility to the bedrock to withstand the tremendous pressures. Commercial operation began September of 2006.
Twin vertical Francis turbines and generators, each capable of generating 6.8 Megawatts of power, are at the heart of the facilities generation. The units were selected for their effieciency in converting the strong seasonal water releases of the Rimrock Reservoir.
